New alternative ‘chicken thighs’ set to be unleashed in supermarkey | City & Business | Finance

Plant-based food pioneer THIS will release a new alternative “chicken thighs” product in Tesco stores this month.

Available in 677 stores and initially priced £3.80 per pack of four, the thighs are made of soya and fava (broad) beans that are high in fibre and protein, bound by an olive-oil based fat. A seaweed coating is used to replicate the structure and texture of chicken skin.

London-based THIS now has 14 products along with service and retail collaborations. The thighs join THIS Isn’t beef mince, and chicken wings and breasts that also launched this year.

Chief executive Mark Cuddigan said: “We are re-inventing the way people experience plant-based dining and are on a mission to lead a change in what people eat to protect animals and the environment.”

Founded in 2019 by converted meat-eaters Andy Shovel and Pete Sharman, THIS is the UK’s largest independent meat-free brand. It grew 47 per cent last year on a £22million turnover.

Having raised £36million from institutional and crowdfunding investors, it plans a further venture capital fund-raising in the coming months and expects to have its first profitable quarter by the end of this year. It will also expand its team of 70.
