How to get rid of flies: They’ll flee your home when using smell they ‘can’t bear’

As temperatures begin to rise and windows are left open to welcome in the fresh air of spring, many households find themselves facing an invasion of pesky flies.

With flies being drawn to various sources of food, moisture, and organic matter, their presence can quickly become a nuisance and a potential health hazard.

Different types of flies are attracted to different environments and food sources.

Common house flies are often found near decaying food, while fruit flies are drawn to sugary substances and overripe fruit.

Drain flies, on the other hand, thrive in moist environments near drains and sinks.

For those willing to explore more unconventional methods, vodka has also been identified as a deterrent for house flies.

“Flies cannot bear the smell of vodka,” explains Mr. Murphy. Spraying vodka-infused solutions or placing vodka bags strategically around the home, particularly in areas like the kitchen, can help keep flies at bay.

To enhance the effectiveness of vodka as a deterrent, basil or lavender essential oils can be added for a more pleasant aroma.

Additionally, apple cider vinegar, a versatile pantry staple, can be used to trap flies.

By half-filling a jar with apple cider vinegar and soap, flies are attracted to the fermented apple scent and become trapped in the solution.

“Once the flies are contained in the jar, they can be released outside,” advises Mr. Murphy.

This simple yet effective method offers a humane way to manage fly infestations without resorting to chemical sprays or traps.
