Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel, was hit by flash floods on Tuesday, causing chaos as planes waded through the torrents on the tarmac.

A video shows a Fly Dubai Boeing 737 ploughing through the several inches of water.

The severe weather led to a slew of flight cancellations and temporary diversions of inbound flights to alternative locations on Tuesday, April 16 evening.

A spokesperson for the airport said: “Due to the intense storm, operations were temporarily suspended for 25 minutes this afternoon, but have since recommenced, and are now in recovery mode.”

Social media was awash with dramatic footage of the downpour, showing vehicles on flooded highways barely able to navigate the sudden waterlogged conditions.

Citizens remain on high alert as authorities warned about more impending thunderstorms, torrents of rain and powerful gusts of wind, leaving several low-lying regions submerged under water still.

On Tuesday, the Middle Eastern country experienced a record level of rainfall dating back as fas as 75 years, with witnessing describing the levels of rainfall as “biblical”.

Emphasising the incredible deluge, UAE’s typical yearly rainfall amounts to around 140-200 mm, while Dubai, notoriously dry, only receives approximately 97mm.

For April specifically, they expect mere numbers in rainfall, roughly about 8mm on average.
