Barclays is closing 18 more bank branches – full list of closures in early 2024 | Personal Finance | Finance

Barclays bank has announced an extra 18 branches will close next year as in-person services become slower and slower.

These 18 extra closures are on top of the 16 closures the bank announced last month.

The banking giant is set to shut 13 sites in England, three in Wales, and two in Scotland.

This round of closures will majority take place in March next year however one branch – the Market Place in Richmond – will close in December 2024.

The closures could see many people who prefer in-person banking travelling miles to find their local branch.

The UK’s largest cash machine network, LINK, keeps track of any planned branch closures across the UK.

The move will see over 200 Barclays branch closures in 2023 and 2024 as online banking becomes more popular and only 10 percent of their transactions happen face-to-face.

Barclays said they are now seeing “many” customers choosing to bank via their app, online banking service or by telephone.

This is the second round of closures announced by the banking group this month.

  • Eltham – February 16, 2024
  • Farnham – February 21, 2024
  • Liscard – March 28, 2024
  • Llanelli – February 22, 2024
  • Newry – February 16, 2024
  • Ruislip – February 16, 2024
  • Sheringham – February 21, 2024
  • South Woodford – February 23, 2024
  • Westbury-on-Trym – February 16, 2024

Other big lenders have been shutting branches as well including NatWest, Lloyds, Virgin Money and Halifax. However, Barclays has reduced its network the most, closing 1,130 sites during this time, Which? consumer champion said.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “As visits to branches continue to fall, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers.

“Where there is no longer enough demand to support a branch, we maintain an in-person presence through our Barclays Local network, live in over 300 locations, based in libraries, town halls, mobile vans and our banking pods.

“We also support access to cash with our cashback without purchase service, 24-hour deposit-taking ATMs and by working alongside the Post Office and Cash Access UK.”
