Rare 50p from 2012 London Olympics could be worth £2,000

Coins can sometimes be incredibly valuable, with some fetching a handsome sum when sold.

The Royal Mint, which produces the majority of UK coinage, has certain coins more valuable than others. Experts always advise checking your collection as you might unknowingly have a small fortune.

A TikTok user recently highlighted a specific 50p piece. The account @CoinCollectingWizard, which shares insights into rare coins and has 136,800 followers, recently discussed the Aquatics coin from the London 2012 Olympics series issued in 2011.

Although millions of these coins were minted, the rarity lies in a version where the swimmer’s face is obscured by water lines.

Finding this unique variant could mean it’s worth up to £2,000 if you’re looking to sell. The TikToker explained: “There were many of the pieces released in 2011, but this edition with the lines make it a rare coin to find. Not many have been found.”

The video has since attracted a flurry of likes and comments. One viewer commented: “I have exactly like this one but in Kenya.”

Another simply stated: “Got one.”

A third shared: “I’ve got one but not the rare one like the hen’s teeth, not many around.”

Looking for other rare coins?

Fortunately for you, we recently revealed the six coins which could make you rich, starting with one piece worth an eye-watering £250.

It’s no secret the Kew Gardens 50p is highly desirable among coin collectors. There’s just 210,000 of these designs in circulation, which makes it ultra difficult to find one. It was first released to mark the 250th anniversary of the iconic London landmark.
