Peaky Blinders’ ‘explosive’ film on Netflix set for production later this year | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Peaky Blinders will be heading into production later this year, returning to Birmingham and the story of Tommy Shelby.

The iconic period drama ran for six seasons on BBC One until it reached its bloody climax in 2022 and almost instantly, there were talks of a follow-up film.

Creator Steven Knight previously stated that a movie would be going ahead but this is the first official confirmation with a studio greenlight.

This eagerly-anticipated next chapter in the Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) is being made for Netflix in association with BBC Film.

What’s even more exciting though is the fact that production will begin later this year, although an exact timeframe hasn’t been announced.

This could potentially mean that the world of Peaky Blinders will be back on our screens sometime in late 2025.

Oscar winning actor Cillian Murphy will be reprising the iconic and haunting role of Tommy Shelby who will also act as a producer on the film.

He told Deadline: “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me.

“It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

Heart of Stone and The Aeronauts director Tom Harper will be directing the upcoming movie and is already well acquainted with the show, seeing as he was behind the latter half of season one.

The script itself will be written by creator Knight who opened up to Birmingham World in March about the project going ahead with Murphy signed up.

In a statement regarding Peaky Blinders getting the studio greenlight, Knight said: “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen.

“It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”

Peaky Blinders first made its big debut in 2013 when it played out on BBC Two with Netflix then getting the rights the following year.

It was then in 2019 that Peaky Blinders made the jump to BBC One after season four and won the BAFTA for Best Drama.

So far, plot details and further casting haven’t been announced but Knight previously said a movie would be set during the Second World War.

Peaky Blinders is available to watch on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
