Major Costa Coffee branch to close its doors next week

On Monday June 10, a major coffee shop chain in Liverpool’s Lord Street is closing its doors to the public amid an ever-evolving high street. 

Costa Coffee will no longer be in operation from June 10 on the high street, but it’s only for two weeks.

The coffee chain said it’s refitting the store to “offer an enhanced customer experience” that, once reopened, will have a “brighter and bolder look and feel, and some brand-new modern features”.

The temporary store closure will allow for a full refurbishment of the Costa Coffee store, which is set to reopen on Wednesday, June 26.

In the meantime, Costa fans who need a caffeine hit will have to visit the chain’s other store inside Next on Church Street, or at Clayton Square while the Lord Street store is closed.

A Costa Coffee Spokesperson said: “As the nation’s favourite coffee shop, with over 2,700 Costa Coffee stores across the UK and Ireland, we regularly review our store estate.

“We invest heavily in opening new stores, relocating stores and investing in store designs to ensure they are right for the customers and communities they serve.

“Our significant store investment programmes have a positive impact on local economies and communities, creating additional job opportunities whilst enhancing the coffee shop experience for customers.”

The news of the store refurbishment follows a string of Costa Coffee closures earlier in the year, such as the branch on Chiswick High Road. 

Chiswick High Road closed on February 6 while the Costa Coffee on Edinburgh’s Bruntsfield Place served its last latte on February 14. Erdington’s store in Birmingham met the same fate on March 3.

Elsewhere, B&M, WHSmith, B&Q and Marks and Spencer (M&S) are shutting their doors across the UK.

According to The Mirror, B&M in Bulwell is shutting on June 7 and another store in Oldham is closing on Saturday, June 22.

The Bulwell Street store is migrating to a new site at 36/48 Main Street, which will open on June 12.

The Oldham site is also relocating to a bigger site but in the same shopping centre.

B&Q, on the other hand, is closing its Sutton store due to “unsuccessful negotiations” when attempting to renew its lease.

A B&Q spokesperson said: “Due to unsuccessful negotiations to renew the lease at our Sutton Court Road store we will be closing our doors on June 8, 2024.

“In preparation for this closure and to ensure we can continue to serve local residents, last year we opened a B&Q Local store on Sutton High Street where customers can continue to shop for all their home improvement needs.”

Meanwhile, M&S is rotating its store estate to offer the “right stores with the right space”, said M&S regional manager, Gordon Scott.
