House cleaner shares how to remove grease that’s settled into the stove over the years

Over time, your stovetop can get muddled with a variety of messes. While it may seem impossible to clean, there are some things you can do to get the gunky mess out of the way. Taking to social media and advice platform Reddit, an individual with a rather dirty stove wanted to know how to get theirs sparkling.

Heading to the website, they wrote: “How do I clean this grease that’s settled into the stove over the years? It’s rough and hard, can’t seem to get it out.”

Social media users commented some tips, including one helpful person who said they clean homes as their occupation.

They wrote: “I clean houses for a living. Get a scraping razor for the burnt-on crud which will get most of it then hit it with krud kutter (Lowe’s) and a magic eraser. The razor would be the type you’d use on a glass top, but it will not scratch the surface.

“I’ve used this method countless times on every stove and never had issues. You will have a new stovetop in no time! This razor method also works inside your oven. If you are too scared to try the razor you may opt for grade#0000 steel wool.

“Again, can be used on top of stove or oven. It will not scratch either. It will just take a lot longer with lots of elbow grease.”

Another social media user chimed in: “When grease is cooked on like that, it becomes a polymer, like the seasoning of a cast iron pan.

“A strong alkali will break it down, the most common one is lye, which is the active ingredient in most oven cleaners like Easy Off.”

An additional Reddit user said: “Back in the ‘olden days’ before easy off and self-cleaning ovens – my mother would place a dish of ammonia into a warm oven and the fumes would soften everything. I had a burned-on spot on a cooktop and had tried everything to get it off – I put a paper towel saturated with ammonia on top of the spot and left it overnight – worked like a charm and the burned on spot just lifted right off.”

Another individual said: “Easy Off fume free oven cleaner may do it. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes, and then scrub off with one of those rough green sponges. And then rinse/wipe once or twice to get off the cleaner residue. Oven cleaner is magical.”

And someone else wrote: “I’m all for doing things the easiest way possible.

“I use the razor method, especially on the glass top and door, and the toaster oven door. It’s a dollar store box cutter where the blade recesses and new blades are stored inside the handle.

“Use it on burnt on crud on pots too. Haven’t scratched anything yet.

“Sometimes I finish up with a magic eraser, if necessary.”
