Discount retailer that ‘has everything’ to shut high street store in days

The Works has more than 520 UK stores, selling everything from books, art and craft materials and gifts, to toys, games and stationery.

Despite its popularity with high street shoppers, the bargain chain is pulling down the shutter on yet another store.

Fans of the brand in East London will see the Heathway Shopping Centre branch in Dagenham close for good by the end of the month.

It comes just weeks after the retailer bid farewell to its shop in Dereham, Norfolk, which was forced to close down on May 10.

Before this, The Works in Penrith, Cumbria shut down as part of “ongoing management” of its portfolio, as explained by the brand’s property director, Jeremy Smith.

The latest closure has sparked sadness among loyal shoppers, who have rated the shop four out of five stars on Google reviews.

One person wrote: “I’ve been living in London for a few months now and I’ve finally found the perfect store for me. They really have everything! The staff and manager are very kind and helpful. Highly recommended.”

Another chimed: “My favourite shop at Heathway. Always recommend people shop there and the manager is so lovely, always with a smile on her face.”

According to a spokesperson for The Works, the closure seems to have been out of the chain’s control.

They said: “We can confirm that we will be closing our Heathway Shopping Centre store in Dagenham after the close of trade on May 30.

“This has been a great location for The Works, but sadly we have been unable to agree suitable lease terms to stay.”

They added that they apologise for any inconvenience caused by the closure and thanked customers.

The chain added that it’s looking to move staff over to local stores nearby.

Shoppers can visit the Romford site which is just three miles away and Beckton Retail Park.

Despite a spate of recent closures, The Works has welcomed some new sites to its portfolio in Wolverhampton, Llanelli, Grimsby and Crewe.
