Care provider busts ‘low-skilled’ myth and says you earn £80,000 salary | Personal Finance | Finance

A large care company has urged people to consider a job in the sector as it can lead to a fulfilling and well paid career.

Workers with care firm Cera can move on from entry level roles to up their salary by 10 percent as supervisors, learning a host of skills and gaining qualifications along the way.

Chief care officer Charlotte Donald told Express.co.uk working in the sector is a “really fulfilling career and there’s lots of opportunities”.

She said it is unfair that care workers are often seen as “low skilled” when in reality they have to learn a lot of things to do their job.

She explained: “We’ve got care workers that are going in and administering really complex medication to vulnerable people, and supporting people with emotional difficulties.

“Talking from experience, it’s really hard.” Her first job in the sector was working night shifts helping people with learning disabilities and mental health needs in a care home.

She saw the quality of care was sometimes poor and this spurred her on to help change the sector.

The group also provides extra care facilities, which are blocks of flats where carers are on hand if a person needs assistance.

Ms Donald said: “Care really can be a fantastic, rewarding and well-paid career and, as the population continues to age and Cera continues its work to take more care out of residential homes and into people’s homes, we want to encourage people not to overlook a career in care.

“This is an exciting time for the sector as providers like Cera drive innovation and new, more sustainable models to provide care for our growing population of over-65s. We need great talent, and hope to see more people from diverse backgrounds applying to work with us.”

Cera provides its workers with on the job training through its Care certificate, which new colleagues complete within their first 12 weeks.

They can then go on to do a Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care. Over 40 percent of workers at Cera have advanced to another position with the company.

Branch managers can get paid between £35,000 and £45,000, while regional operations managers have a salary band between £50,000 and £60,000. Colleagues can then progress to become regional director, earning up to £80,000.
