Rare coin from 1905 worth £9,000 – see how to spot one

Coin collectors could be sitting on a small fortune if they have certain designs in their pockets. Over the years, we’ve seen various coins sell for thousands on eBay.

Now, TikTok user @coincollectingwizard, who regularly shares content about money, revealed a specific coin to look out for. In a short video, the TikToker highlighted a pre-decimal UK coin with a “very low” mintage of just 166,000.

They explained: “Half crowns from this date have 92.5% silver in them too, which means it will also hold a silver value too.”

The British half crown, equivalent to two shillings and six pence, was first issued in 1549. They added: “So if you are lucky enough to find a half crowned dated 1905 then you are looking at £9,000 in uncirculated condition.

“Even if the coin isn’t the best quality, it can still sell for £500, £1,500 and even £4,000 so it really does depend on the condition with the one.”

The video has since garnered hundreds of views and likes, with one viewer commenting: “Great video mate,” while others asked about other potentially valuable coins. Meanwhile there are other coins to look out for in your collection.

Previously, the rare coins to make you a millionaire was revealed on TikTok. In a handy video, user @coincollectingwizard talked through the silvers and coppers which could “make you a millionaire”.

The clip, which garnered 97,000 likes and thousands of shares, listed four coins in particular. From the famous Kew Gardens 50p to a rare 2p from 1983.

They mentioned the Kew Gardens coin in gold and claimed a version of this sold for £6,800 at the Royal Mint’s online auction.

The ultra rare version was estimated between £5,000 and £6,000 with a starting bid for the coin around the £4,000 region. Not bad for a 50p piece you could have down the back of the sofa!
