Hydrangeas task is crucial for ‘growth’ and ‘big blooms’ – doing it too late poses a risk

There are some exceptions to that rule. That’s for the Smooth or Panicle hydrangea varieties. 

They produce blooms in late summer and early fall. You can prune in the late winter or early spring, as long as the plant hasn’t started to bud yet. 

“If the plant does shoot forth new growth before you can prune, simply let it go until the following year. Once growing occurs, you risk removing new blooms for the upcoming season.”
